Foreword

We oF the annual staff present this 1958 Rhododendron
to you with the hope that in these pages you will see
reflected some of the phases of college life which combine
to make Appalachian more than a school— a place of preparation,
of developing leadership, of making friends, of serving others.

"Time," wrote Emerson, "dissipates to shining ether the
solid angularity of facts." Although it was impossible to record
all events, we have attempted to use as many words and
pictures as possible trusting that, with the aid of this book,
time will not "dissipate to shining ether" the memories of the
year 1957-58 at Appalachian.

Administration and Faculty

In addition to their consistently excellent v\ork in the fields oF co-ordination
and classroom instruction, the influence of these men and women is evident
in many other facets of campus life. Their high ideals and principles serve
constantly as examples to the two thousand students who are training for the
teaching profession here at Appalachian.

Working willingly with students in extra-curricular activities and varied
school projects, as well as serving as personal counselors to scores of others,
they have displayed a genuine interest in the students beyond the limits of
the classroom and have won the respect and admiration of the entire student
body.

From the time a student enters Appalachian State Teachers College until the day
he recei\'es his diploma, a great deal of attention is focused on providing him with
a liberal education. The somewhat general curriculum, embraced as a freshman,
widens into many areas of specialization as sophomores and juniors and finally
culminates in the methods courses and student teaching experience which highlight
the senior year.

Since 1948 Appalachian has offered a Master's degree in education, and each
year the college enrolls an increasing number of applicants for this degree. This year
for the first time graduate fellowships were oiTered, thus enabling a student to gain
valuable experience by teaching a limited number of college classes while working
toward his M.A. degree.

Cheerleaders

The cheerleaders are very closel)' associated with the \ arious
athletic actixities on campus. Under the direction of Dr. John
Van Noppen, this group works to promote interest in sports
and sportsmanship during intercollegiate acti\ities.

The cheerleaders are chosen on a competitive basis each
spring and the chief cheerleader is chosen in a campus-wide
election.

This year the cheerleaders, with the aid of some of the
business men in town and the college faculty, were able to
attend the football game at Tampa, Florida.

The group, through the generosity of the athletic department,
